Learner Profile:
- Learners who are starting out in environmental management and want a solid foundation of environment and sustainability knowledge to build on.
- Those who would like to gain Associate membership of IEMA.
Learners will obtain a comprehensive understanding of environmental and sustainability controls and how to manage these in their own work environment.

- Engage with stakeholders.
- Outline tools and techniques that identify opportunities and risks.
- Identify and propose ways to improve performance.
- Support change and transformation to improve sustainability.
On successful completion of this course the learner becomes eligible for Associate membership of IEMA (giving them the AIEMA suffix).
Completion of the Foundation Certificate meets the entry requirements for the Certificate in Environmental Management leading to Practitioner
membership of IEMA.
Course Content
The course covers a wide range of environmental, sustainability and governance principles and will give learners an understanding of the breadth of the sustainability agenda, and the management tools and skills that they will need when working within this area.
These include:
- Implications of global trends for the environment, society, the economy and for organisations
- Sustainable business/governance principle Environmental Principles
- Major policy and legislation Major tools, techniques, systems and practices to improve sustainability performance.
- The role of innovation in developing sustainable products, services and solutions
- Data collection, analysis and evaluation
- Research and planning for sustainable solutions.
- Effective communications and feedback
- Stakeholder engagement
- Tools and techniques to identify opportunities and risks.
- Environmental and sustainability performance improvement
Learner Prerequisites:
Candidates should at minimum have completed the Junior Cert with pass grades in at least five ordinary level subjects (including Maths and English).
Progression pathway:
- QQI Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate in Environmental Sustainability in the Workplace (5S21794) or
- QQI Level 5 Sustainable Supply Chain Procurement (5N22200) or
QQI Level 5 Lean Practice for Sustainable Business (5S22193)
Certification / Awarding Body/Credits:
Certification: Institute of Environmental Management (IEMA) “Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management”.
