The aim of this course is to provide a solid foundation in sustainability and the associated management tools deployed to improve environmental performance in an organisation. Learners will obtain a comprehensive understanding of environmental and sustainability controls and how to manage these in their own work environment. It is aimed at learners who are starting out in environmental management.

This course is aimed at learners who are starting out in environmental management and want a solid foundation of environment and sustainability knowledge to build on.
Also for those who would like to gain Associate membership of IEMA.
Learner prerequisites:
Candidates should, at minimum, have completed the Junior Cert with pass grades in at least five ordinary level subjects (including Maths and English).

· Outline major tools, techniques, systems and practices used to improve sustainability performance.
· Outline the role of innovation and other leading practices in developing sustainable products and services and providing sustainable solutions.
· Collect data, perform analysis, and evaluate information.
· Research and plan to provide sustainable solutions.
· Deliver effective communication and capture feedback.
· Engage with stakeholders.
· Outline tools and techniques that identify opportunities and risks.
· Identify and propose ways to improve performance.
· Support change and transformation to improve sustainability.
On successful completion of this course the learner becomes eligible for Associate membership of IEMA (giving them the AIEMA suffix). Completion of the Foundation Certificate meets the entry requirements for the Certificate in Environmental Management leading to Practitioner membership of IEMA.
The course covers a wide range of environmental, sustainability and governance principles and will give learners an understanding of the breadth of the sustainability agenda, and the management tools and skills that they will need when working within this area.

This course is 35 hours long, taking place over one week.
There is a 1 hour open-book multiple-choice exam, which is completed online (offsite) and on dates set by IEMA. Learners must achieve 70% to pass the course.
Certification: Institute of Environmental Management (IEMA) “Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management”.

Learners can progress to the following courses:
