Description

Learner Profile:

The course is suitable for anyone who is familiar with the conventions of engineering drawing and dimensional (or ±) tolerances and is relevant to anyone who must produce or interpret mechanical engineering specifications including Designers, Engineers, Inspectors, Technicians and Engineering Management.

Learner Prerequisites:

Candidates should at minimum have completed the Junior Cert with pass grades in at least five ordinary level subjects (including Maths and English)

Learning Outcome:

On successful completion of this this course the learner will gain an understanding of the following:

  • ISO & ASME: the two systems of standards for mechanical specification
  • The benefits of using Geometrical Tolerancing
  • How Geometrical Tolerancing works (four fundamental geometrical properties)
  • Features and Features of Size
  • Linear size tolerances and the Envelope Requirement
  • Datums and datum features
  • Common datums (based on multiple datum features)
  • Datums systems and the six degrees of freedom
  • How to select and identify datum features
  • the use of datum targets
  • Theoretically Exact Dimensions
  • Tolerance frames
  • Tolerance characteristics & symbols
  • Tolerance frame modifiers (CZ etc.)
  • How to apply geometrical tolerancing in a systematic way
  • Maximum Material Requirement and bonus tolerance
