Description

Learner Profile:

Learners should be employed Maintenance and Process Technicians

At the end of the course the learners will be able to:

    • Describe sensing principles including inductive, capacitive, thru beam, fibre optic, diffuse, retro reflective sensors, pressure sensor.
    • Explain sensor terminology to include set point LO, DO, NO, NC setup optical sensors.
    • Wire and verify NPN, PNP and 2 wire-sensors to PLC input cards.
    • Follow a logical procedure for adjusting the sensitivity for robust sensing for the listed sensors.
    • Be capable of interpreting the visual indications that inform sensor behaviour.
    • Set up a sensor to meet a production demand specification.
    • Troubleshoot faulty production line.

Course Modules:

    Module 1 – Non-Optical Sensors

    • Operating principle and setup requirements of Module 1 sensors for robust sensing performance.
    • Terminology: Setpoint and multi-setpoint, Resolution, Error and Hysteresis.
    • Sensor Theory Quiz
    • Normally Open and Normally Closed configurations, NPN and PNP configurations.
    • Wire and test the performance of Module 1 Sensors to PLC input cards.
    • Sensors in closed loop systems including sensing position, speed, and temperature
    • Sensor and Actuator families.
    • Application examples of sensors: Use Factory IO to solve faulty production systems that include Module 1 Sensor technology

    Module 2 – Photo-electric Sensors

    • Photo-Optics theory: properties of light, light sources, Position detection, sensor classifications
    • Operating principle and setup requirements of Module 2 sensors for robust sensing performance.
    • Terminology: Light ON/Dark ON, Diffuse reflection, Time of Flight, background/foreground suppression, emitter/receiver, luminance, intensity.
    • Wire and test the performance of Module 2 Sensors to PLC input cards.
    • Application examples of sensors: Use Factory IO to solve faulty production systems that include Module 2 Sensor technology

    Module 3 - Troubleshooting

    • Each learner is given a Factory IO licence. We present learners with an automated production line animated scene using an extensive range of sensors providing feedback product movement and the completion of actuator movements. After Learners get familiar with the correct operation of the production equipment, they load up faulty versions of the scene with contain instructor injected faults. This provides learners with the essential thinking skills that can be applied in the workplace.
