Certificate in Operational Excellence

Designed for learners who wish to improve their knowledge of operational excellence/process improvement methodologies, with a specific focus on digitization strategies. The course will provide learners with the foundational knowledge, skills and competences they require to enter and sustain employment as the ‘Operators and Technicians of the Future’ in advanced manufacturing contexts where process digitisation occurs, or where a transition to process digitisation is anticipated.

Description

Learner Profile:

The programme is specifically designed for learners seeking a qualification that will enable them to either progress within their current employment or take up employment in the manufacturing or service sectors.

The programme will be open to applications from Irish citizens, EEA nationals and learners who otherwise have the right to reside in

Ireland and who meet the programme’s English Language Proficiency requirements. The College will not be entering the programme on

the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) and therefore will not be recruiting non-EEA learners.

The profile of the target learner group will include:

• Mature learners who are in operational roles within manufacturing/service and seek to maintain the currency of their skills or progress in their careers (up-skilling).

• Mature job seekers who have no previous experience in manufacturing/service and seek a qualification that will prepare them to enter an operational role (re-skilling).

Learner prerequisites:

Minimum H7/O6 in five leaving Cert subjects or equivalent.

Proficiency in English Language required (B2+ level or equivalent on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Learning outcomes:

On completion of this programme the learner should be able to:

  • Describe the key principles that define business success in a manufacturing or service setting.
  • Describe the principles and applications of lean thinking, value creation and process optimization; applying the concepts of lean thinking to identify opportunities to optimize processes. 
  • Exhibit a fundamental knowledge of the concepts and tools of six sigma and apply the basic skills and tools of six sigma to define problems, measure data, identify root cause and propose sustainable solutions to eliminate defects and reduce variation in any basic process.
  • Establish true root cause and propose solutions to recognize the importance of data integrity, accurate data gathering, analysis and presentation of technical information.
  • Be able to describe their foundational knowledge of the characteristics of technical communication and presentation and apply specialized skills and tools in technical communications to produce documents and presentations which communicate in a clear concise manner to a defined target audience.

One Saturday per month 10-4pm, 2 evenings online during each week

Exam/Contineous Assessment details:

Module 1: Operational Excellence – Lean Thinking Module: 100% CA (10 ECTS).


Module 2: Operational Excellence – Six Sigma/CAPA Module: 50% CA, 50% Exam - 2 hours (10 ECTS).


Module 3: Digital Communication and Technical Reporting Module: 100% CA (5 ECTS).

Progression Pathway:

Learners may complete additional QQI Micro-Credential programmes and work towards completing a:

• Level 6 Certificate in Operational Excellence for Digitization (Minor Award with 60 ECTS)


This course can be combined with:

• Level 6 Certificate in Information Technology for Digitization (Minor Award with 60 ECTS) to achieve:

• Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science in Process Digitization

(120 ECTS).
